Computer memory, both RAM and hard drives are essential to every computer and to most technology in our modern world. Computer drives are always getting faster, small, and with more memory capacity. The average computer hard drive size is between 250 and 500 GB today, when four years ago the average size was 60 to 120GB. Today you can get portable drives that size for under $100. Another kind of computer memory is the external hard drive, which is exactly what it sounds like. It is a traditional hard drive enclosed in its own case, which you then connect to your computer via USB or FireWire cable. Most external hard drives do not need their own power supply, but some of the larger drives to require an extra plug. There are even 1TB (terabyte) drives available for multimedia storage. But as with any electronic, the larger and better you go, the more expensive it is going to be. For those out to buy separate memory to build their computer keep in mind the requirements of the software involved. When building a Windows computer, Vista can take up a lot of space, and needs at least 2GB of RAM to run properly. When building a computer that runs software such as Linux, the requirements are less, but you still need to pay attention to what the software provider says it needs for hardware in order to run properly. Computer memory can always be upgraded as well, which is a far more common practice among desktop owners than laptop owners. Laptops require special, smaller components in order to fit in the laptop, while desktops have more space.
