With Floppy drives, you can use your floppy disks to store information, back up data or transfer data from one computer to another. Floppy drives are designed differently by different companies but the mechanism in which they work is the same. There are external floppy drives too which are more convenient but you have to remember that you have to select according to the computer you have. Some external floppy drives can be used with a variety of computers while others cannot. With time floppy drives may stop functioning due to wearing out or damage. Dust and other dirt may damage your floppy drive especially if you keep the computer in a dirty environment. However, they can easily be repaired if you find a suitable qualified person to do it. Poor floppy disks inserted into the floppy disk drives from time to time also contribute to damage. Sometimes floppy drives may send error messages when you are trying to read or write data to the floppy disk. They may also refuse to open the floppy disk but you can easily troubleshoot on your own by following the prompted instructions depending on the operating system. If your floppy drive is completely damaged you can always get another one of the same model and install. The use of floppy drives has declined because they are considered easy entry points for viruses especially if you don't have antivirus software. Although you can always scan the floppy disk before using, it is very easy for an infected floppy disk to transfer viruses to your computer via the floppy drive hence most people avoid using them. Floppy drives when maintained properly can be long lasting. Furthermore, floppy disks have become cheap and reduced to favorable sizes though you cannot compare them with others such as flash disk drives. Modern floppy drives are designed easy to maintain since most of them are not affected by dirt easily.
