Print servers
Print Servers A print server is a computer appliance that connects a printer to a local area network. With a print server, printing can be done without the need of a file savers or PC. Networked printing mostly accounts for more than 60 percent of all network activity. It is advisable to direct all printing assignments through a general file server so as to save on costs and to prevent the loss of information. Print servers can be internal or external. External print servers are popular and allow users to connect more than one printer to one print server. Print servers can be configured to make some alterations or correct print data to come up with the preferred outcome from any type of printer e.g. changing string after and before printing the information and changing character sets to suit a certain printer and providing ASCII to Postscript conversion. There are numerous types of print servers. Wireless print savers allow a number of printers to be expediently shared across a WiFi network and can operate independently without the need to turn on the computer.
