Computer components are fairly self explanatory. They cover everything from basic PC hardware (the physical parts that make up a computer), to software (programs and applications), and external accessories also known as peripherals. Desktop monitors, hard drives, keyboards, and mice are computer components (hardware) that are familiar to beginners as well as veteran users. As users gain technological experience, they may choose to delve into more complex computer components such as RAM, mother boards, processors, as well as sound/ video cards.
The most important computer component is called the computer case. The case contains the parts that allow the computer to process data. The motherboard and central processing unit are considered parts of the computer case. Other computer components are divided into two categories - input and output devices. An input device is something that sends instructions to the CPU. A keyboard is a common example of an input device because it is an external tool that sends information to the CPU. Output devices are machines that transfer data from inside a computer into the real world. Examples of output devices include monitors and printers.
Computer memory is another important component. Without memory, a computer would not be able to store data. Memory is a broad term that refers to RAM (Random Access Memory) and temporary storage devices within the CPU. Memory is stored in the computer hard drive. A powerful hard drive can store thousands of gigabytes of data. Hard drives can be both internal and external to a computer. Portable hard drives are a popular option for users who need more memory than their internal drive offers or need to back up data for secure storage.
Computer components are not all business. There are many accessories available that are designed for entertainment purposes. High quality speakers can enhance the gaming and movie experience for recreational users. Of course, good speakers are not complete without top of the line sound/video cards. Users interested in creating and producing their own music should also invest in a superior sound card. They may wish to purchase electronic keyboards and digital sampling synthesizers. Serious computer gamers are another viable niche market and manufacturers are building certain products to cater to this growing subgroup. Almost all essential computer components are available in forms that appeal to gaming enthusiasts. Gamers can buy enhanced graphics cards and processors to improve the speed of their PCs. There are also a variety of devices such as wireless controllers, joysticks, and yokes designed specifically for gamers.
