Overview: flashes

Camera Flashes Most photographers know the importance of a flash. The basic mechanism of a flash, most commonly a canon flash, is to instantaneously flash a very bright artificial light at the camera's object. Flashes can be used for any number of purposes: illuminating a scene, bringing out detail, altering the lighting, bringing out natural light, drowning out certain types of natural light, and numerous other uses. Illuminating a scene: When you take a picture, flashing lights from your canon flash, more technically referred to as a electronic xenon flash lamp, flood the scene, lighting it up so your camera can accurately capture it. Flashing the scene like this, it is also possible to assist a macro shot, a fish eye lens shot, and shots that require a very quick lens capture. Bringing out detail: Very often, natural light will not be adequate to get the desired level of detail. In this case, a small amount of flash can do wonders in bringing out the detail of your subject, or washing out some unwanted shadows. On the other hand, there are times where you can get more detail without using flashes. If there is a good source of light on your subject already, try not to use the flash.

Altering the lighting: In photography, light levels are very important. If you have a detachable flash, try positioning it around the room or the scene and seeing how you can change the dynamics of the light. Some of the best photographs in the world have been created by flashing from odd or unexpected angles. Bringing out natural light: Sometimes, using your canon flash outdoors can have a dazzling effect. Perhaps there is some indirect light that, if brightened, will bring out vibrant colors in your photograph. You never know; experiment with your flash, its positioning, and the level if the flash, and you may get some beautiful, serendipitous results. Flashing lights can have unexpected effects, and you never know what you're going to get until you try. Indoor Flash Use: Flashes are most commonly used indoors, where natural light can be inadequate, or possibly not be desirable for a certain composition. In this case, it's very important that you are able to set your flash. Most modern flashes, particularly a canon flash, can be adjusted for brightness. If you have a digital camera, take multiple pictures with different flash settings; you will be surprised at the results. Drawbacks: Very often, amateur photographers can over do it, flashing a scene into complete saturation. Tasteful use of the flash is often best. Tinker with the settings on your flash so that you can get the best possible photograph. Usually, a lower flash setting is more appropriate. Watch out, though. Flashes can blind; if you are too close to a human or animal subject, it is possible that you can temporarily blind it. Though it is difficult to cause lasting damage this way, it's something to watch out for. Dogs in particular can be excited by a flash.
